dust settled where you once spoke
resting imprints of words
pressed against the past
close the future as it would be
new day coming
shake dust off my feet
dust settled where you once spoke
resting imprints of words
pressed against the past
close the future as it would be
new day coming
shake dust off my feet
hands kept in pockets
winter breath stays close to me
the city is cold
dream dark night
walk ancient city street
flicker lamp high
corner illuminate
jazz sound punctuate
my old town blues
and so the sun rises
bringing warmth over the land I was given
on this land where I now lay
looking over the ocean
pouring into the bay
this land I did not appreciate
I broke it in
I toiled during those days
under the sun and during the rain
I laboured through the seasons
as a man made to work
only resting and smoking when the sun dropped west
this land became a place for my demons
and anger grew like a weed
I cursed the soil
and never worked another day
I broke in this land
as a broken man
with sorrow I look back at it all
and all the pain caused
the new day has just begun
with my ashes scattered on this land
under the golden sun
seduce life and all desires
live in dreams and destroy fantasies
hold to me, my friends
do not leave my side
I can not do all this living
without you
let us live simple lives
rich with writing and reading
full relationships with good friends
and good wine
each person rich in experience and passionate experience
I haven’t seen my family in many years
held their hands or shared my fears
too long since I’ve laughed with my father
or placed a kiss on the cheek of my mother
this road is one to walk alone
leave my children to grow at home
my daughter, I’ll miss her wedding day
the joy of giving her away
every time they think of me
they’ll speak about the man I would have been
smile at secrets I would have known
cry when they feel alone
I wish the journey did not end this way
and trust I’ll see them again some day
I’ve lost my old pair of shoes
with gum stuck on the sole from the street
in monte carlo
where those without wealth snap photos of those with
expensive cars and luxury yachts tied to buoys
and dust from san sebastian
walking from one tapa bar to another
dim light cover street nights
as waves from the bay rolled in
with tears on the side from the bike i used to ride
over the canals in amsterdam
i danced in those old shoes to banging drums
in kreuzberg berlin
i raced up the spanish steps and looked down
at the sea of umbrellas and listened to the sound of rain
bounce off the rooftops, steps and street performers
those shoe laces broken and frayed at the ends
walking up the steps of the sacre coeur
red wine stain on the canvas
sharing bottles overlooking the latin quarter and eiffel tower
those old canvas shoes

Always see what is on the other side
